Cops kill man who stabbed K9 police dog to death in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania
WILKINSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA — Pennsylvania police shot and killed a man in Wilkinsburg on Sunday after he stabbed a K9 officer to death.
The incident began when suspect Bruce Kelly junior got into a fight with his father Bruce Kelly senior, KDKA reported, citing Port Authority Police.
The pair had been drinking in public, police spokesman Jim Ritchie was quoted by the New York Daily News.
The father and son ran away when approached by police, KDKA reported. When officers caught up with the younger Kelly, he refused orders, KDKA reported, citing police.
The younger Kelly then lunged at an officer with a knife, according to the New York Daily News. Officers tried unsuccessfully to subdue the suspect with a taser, which didn’t work because of his heavy winter clothes, the New York Daily News reported.
Police then set K9 Officer Aren on the suspect, who stabbed the German Shepherd with his knife and the dog went down.
At this point, officers opened fire multiple times, shooting the younger Kelly dead, according to a witness who spoke to KDKA.
The dog was pronounced dead at a nearby veterinary hospital. He was not wearing a protective vest.
The elder Kelly was captured, but it is unknown if he will face charges, KDKA reported.
Allegheny County police are now investigating the younger Kelly’s death.
